Epidemiology
H. influenzae type b (Hib) has historically been responsible for the majority of diease; however, with the introduction of the Hib vaccine, very little is seen today
Classification and Characteristics
- small gram negative baccili
- requires X (heme) and V (NAD) factors for growth; will grow on chocolate agar
Virulence Factors
- may be encapsulated, though the majority of mucosal disease is due to non-encapsulated bacteria
