Visual Fields Test
The visual fields test is, appropriately, for vision. It is used to identify and determine patterns of vision loss.
Normal Visual Fields
Normally, we can see:
- 60 degrees superiorly
- 70 degrees inferiorly
- 60 degrees nasally
- 90 degrees laterally
We have a blind spot corresponding to our optic disc.
temporal fields (which are seen in the nasal retina) cross in the chiasm
- bitemporal field defects suggest chiasm problem
Testing Visual Fields
by confrontation
cover one eye; use palm to avoid peeking through fingers
- look at my nose (checks for central scotoma (sp)
- can you see my forehead while looking at my nose? - peripheral scotoma (sp)
- "how many fingers?" in all four quadrants
- "add these fingers" on both sides - checks corpus collosum connections
