Risk factors include:
Breech presentation
pelvice tumours or fibroids
contracted pelvis
premature ruptures of membranes
Management
Need to assess maternal vs HR
Is the fetus alive? Is it viable by gestational age?
Rule out lethal anomaly
Give oxygen, start an IV, and perform an abdominal exam and pelvic exam.
Relieve cord compression. If the cord is outside the introoitus, gently place it back inside the vagina. Manipulation or cold can cause vasospasm.
