Introduction
Migraine - 1/30 children, 1/10 adults, 1/4 physicians.
Definition
- at least 5 attacks
- last 4-72 hours; well otherwise
- at least two of the following characteristics:
- unilateral
- pulsating
- moderate or severe pain intensity
- aggragation by or causing avoidance of routine physical activity
- nausea/vomiting or photophobia/phonophobia
- not attributed to another disorder
Aura
Management
Identify and avoid triggers; a diary can be very helpful. Two strikes and you're out.
- chocolate
- red wine
- many many others
Sleep well to prevent migraines; for many people, getting to sleep right away can reduce them.
Reduce stress.
Smells
Lights can be a trigger.
Make sure people are eating
Medications
Take meds early and in sufficient dosage.
Pediatrics: tryptans do not work well.
