First Aid
First aid is the care given for an illness or injury that is provided until further help arrives or the illness or injury is dealt with.
Fundamentals of First Aid
The basic steps to responding to an emergency are as follows:
- Primary scence survey: check the scence for hazards and determine the mechanism of injury
- Check the casualty's level of consciousness
- Primary survey: check ABC's - airway, breathing, circulation
- Call EMS
- Provide first aid for life-threatening problems
- Secondary survey: check casualty for other problems and treat appropriately
- Monitor and casualty's condition, especially breathing and circulation
- Help casualty rest in most comfortable position and reassure
