Ceftriaxone
3rd generation cephalosporin
Uses
- very good for gram positive bacteria; used as emperic therapy for pneumonia
- crosses membranes so can be used in meningitis
- reduced coverage for gram negative bacteria
Mechanism
- inhibits PBPs, preventing cell wall synthesis
- more resistant to beta-lactamase than penicillins

short term
Once daily dosing can cause biliary sludging.
long term
Counter-Indications and Drug Interactions
- do not use in jaundiced baby

- half excreted in liver, half in kidney
