Microbiology II

Introduction to Microbes

Students will be expected to be able to describe the characteristics, disease manifestations, and treatments of the pathogens on the following pages:

• bacteria
• mycoplasma
• viruses
• fungi
• parasites

Presentations and Diseases

Students will be able to describe common and important causes, signs and symptoms, differential diagnosis, and treatments for:

Clinical Presentations acute diarrhea fever in the neutropenic patient fever of unknown origin bacteremia and sepsis

Specific Infections upper respiratory tract infections pharyngitis pneumonia otitis media gastroenteritis hepatitis urinary tract infections sexually transmitted infections HIV tuberculosis infectious endocarditis meningitis encephalitis intraabdominal abscess soft tissue infections osteomyelitis septic arthritis

 

Diagnosis

Students will be expected to describe the indications and protocol for the following:

• gram stain
• bacterial culture
• antimicrobial susceptibility tests

 

Students will be expected to be able to describe the indications and protocol for, and demonstrate, the following:

• blood cultures
• nasopharyngeal swabs and aspirate
• throat culture
• sputum culture
• urine culture

 

 

 

Prevention and Treatment

Students will be expected to describe spectrum, mechanism of action, and side effects of:

• antibacterial medications
• antiviral medications
• antifungal medications
• antiparasitic medications

Tropical Medicine

Students will be expected to describe features, manifestations, and treatments of the following pathogens:Hald

• Plasmodium spp (malaria)
• Schistosoma

 

• infection in an international traveller/immigrant

Cases and Questions

Students will be able to explain the answers to questions in the following cases:

• Albert Chezzecook (meningitis)
