Epidemiology

Nontuberculous mycobacteria are present in the environment - soil, water, plants, and animals.

The majority of patients have underlying lung disease:

COPD, bronchiectasis, previous TB, lung cancer. Other predisposing conditions include AIDS, alcoholism, and diabetes
