Atkins Diet
The following are potential concerns of a high protein diet: (references needed)
- Low in plant foods (and therefore fiber), vitamins, phytochemicals
- Intake of animal protein increases risk for heart disease (high in saturated fat & cholesterol)
- Excessive intake of red meat has been linked with colon cancer
- Excessive intake of protein will burden on the kidney (urea production)
- High intakes of dietary protein has been linked with increased calcium loss and osteoporosis
A recent study showed that the consumption of a high-fat meal (ham-and-cheese sandwich, whole milk, and ice cream) reduced systemic arterial compliance by 25% at 3 hours and 27% at 6 hours
