Signs, Symptoms, and Diagnosis

 

  • history and physical exam
  • lab investigations
  • diagnostic imaging

History and Physical Exam

 

 

  • weakness is the most common symptom, and is most often large muscle groups of the trunk or extremities
  • diplopia
  • dysarthria and dysphagia
  • respiratory insufficiency or myocardial depression may indicate hypophosphatemia

neurologic:

  • paresthesias
  • altered mental status
  • coma

 

  • hypotension and other signs of congestive heart failure
  • skin and conjunctivae may be pale secondary to the hemolytic anemia that may complicate hypophosphatemia.
