Synovial fluid should be examined with all arthritides and whenever joint infection is probable.
Evaluation should include
cell count and differential
crystal examination for sodium urate and calcium phosphate dehydrate (CPPD)
bacteria (culture and sensitivity, gram stain)
500-1000 = non-inflammatory (OA)
1000-10,000 = inflammatory
