Introduction
Injuries are a leading cause of death in children >1 year. Common causes include MVCs, burns, drowning, falls, choking, and infanticide.
Ensure parents know the Poison Control Centre phone number
Ensure smoke detectors installed and working
Counselling
0-6 months
- do not infant unattended on bed, on change table, or in tub
- check bath water temperature
- check bottle temperature
- ensure appropriate car seat
6-12 months
- install stair barriers
- avoid sharp corners
- cover electrical outlets
- unplug appliances when not in use
- keep small objects, plastic bags, medications from reach; if it can fit through a toilet paper tube, it's too small for babies to play with re: choking
- supervise during feeding
1-2 years
- turn pot handles away from edge
- avoid small, hard foods
- prevent eating and running
2-5 years
- do not leave unsupervised
- bicycle helmet
- teach about safety on bicycle, strangers, streets
- swimming lessons, sunscreen
- fences around pools
