Introduction

 

The presence of four or more white blood cells per high power field in centrifuged urine is termed pyuria and suggests infection or inflammation.

 

Sterile pyuria suggests prostatitis, chronic urethritis, renal tuberculosis, renal stones, papillary necrosis, or acute interstitial nephritis. Eosinophilia, as detected by Wright's stain or Hansel's stain, is more specific for interstitial nephritis.
