Differential Diagnosis
Causes of secondary dysmenorrhea include:
- leiomyomata (fibroids)
- endometriosis
- adenomyosis
- intrauterine device
- pelvic inflammatory disease
- tubo-ovarian abscess
- ovarian torsion
- ovarian cysts
Other conditions to consider include:
- pregnancy (ectopic pregnancy)
- UTI
- ovarian cancer
- peritonitis

Investigations
- lab investigations
- diagnostic imaging
Lab Investigations
Lab tests can be done to rule out some of the causes of secondary causes:
- CBC
- urinalysis
- beta-HCG
- swabs/cultures
Diagnostic Imaging
Imaging is not helpful for primary dysmonorrhea.
- ultrasound can be helpful for diagnosing endometriosis
- CT scanning may be helpful for ovarian torsion
