Introduction
Screening assumes conditions and diseases are out there in sufficient numbers to warrant investigation without signs or symptoms.
Screening tests are sensitive, but not necessarily specific, tests done to a population at risk for the purpose of increasing prognosis or other things.
- prenatal screening
- cancer screening
Predictive Testing is neither diagnostic nor preventive.
benefits
- sense of control, 'knowing for sure'
- ability to plan
- relief when tests are negative
- ability to prepare family and children
harms
- takes away hope - depression, suicide
- guilt
- difficulties adapting to new status
- 'survivor guilt' in those that test negative
- insurance
- stigmatization
Predictive Testing in Diseases with Incomplete Penetrance
Unlike some diseases, a postive test allows for pre-emptive action
- increased surveillance
- lifestyle changes
- chemoprevention
- prophylactic surgery
