Family Physicians

The GP is often referred to as the gatekeeper to the provincial health care system, representing the entry point into the health care system. Perhaps a better way would be to think of them as 'wayfinders', guiding instead of permitting/blocking entry.

The four principles of family medicine

The CFPC has four principles of family medicine:

The family physician is a skilled clinician

Family medicine is a community-based discipline

The family physican is a resource to a defined practice population

The patient-physician relationship is central to the role of the family physician

Family Physicians and Mental Health

Family physicians are often the only confidants people can trust.

Can be difficult to set boundaries (eg time between sessions),

Remuneration for psychotherapy is limited

Psychiatrists often work in teams with other professionals: nurses, social workers, and psychologists, occupational therapists
