The GP is often referred to as the gatekeeper to the provincial health care system, representing the entry point into the health care system. Perhaps a better way would be to think of them as 'wayfinders', guiding instead of permitting/blocking entry.
The CFPC has four principles of family medicine:
Family physicians are often the only confidants people can trust.
Can be difficult to set boundaries (eg time between sessions),
Remuneration for psychotherapy is limited
Psychiatrists often work in teams with other professionals: nurses, social workers, and psychologists, occupational therapists
