Receptors

Chemosensory cilia sense odorants via GPCRs, activating adenylate cyclase which in turn activates CNG (cyclic nucleotide-gated) channels. CNG channels are non-selective cation channels, generating action potential

There are 1000 genes for olfactory receptor GPCRs, but only a few hundred are turn on.

Nerve Pathway

Nerve fibres (forming CN I) reach through the cribiform plate and synapse within the ofactory bulb, which becomes the olfactory tract.

Information is processed within the amygdaloid body, near the uncus.
