Introduction

Synovial fluid is composed of plasma ultrafiltrate containing hyaluronic acid, secreted by synovial cells and responsible for increased viscosity.

Lining of the synovium is only 1-2 cells thick. The sub-intimal layer has much fat and few cells.

 

Type A synoviocytes are macrophage-like (Bone marrow derived)

Type B synoviocytes are fibroblast-like and predominantly make up the synovial lining.
