Health Care Change

"The voyage of the best ship is a zigzag line of a hundred tacks" Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits onself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforseen incidents, meetings, and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do or dream, you can begin it now. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now." - Goethe

What do different health care providers need in order to change, and how can we find this information?

We seek strategic partnership with others in the Department of Health, Health Care Conversations, Regulatory Bodies, and others. We want our vision to be taken up and held with us by others.

We seek conversations which lead to action, because together we have the means to shift things.

We do not want multiple parallel processes of change to be going on, unless there is clear communication among us all.

Education is key, but it is only part of it. Bright-eyed students facing a system they were not expecting can be disheartening. Focusing only on students will mean generations of work for the future.

clinicians are really busy and academics are really busy. how to get them to talk together?

Enablers of Change

Citizen-Driven Change

We, as health care providers, need to show up as citizens.

As facilitators (initiators/accompaniers) of change, we need to connect with and represent the voice of the province.

We have change-inducing methodologies to offer

Barriers of Change

There are important business model barriers to change. Fee for service is a bad thing.

Do we have the capacity to change existing practices, or would it be better to focus on emerging groups?

New providers don't have an infrastructure investment, but they also have no community investment.
